Comment:

This activity went well for us. It took approximately 60 minutes to complete, which is a little more than how long we expected it to take. We did not do the sorting materials portion of the lesson, because we did not have time or the appropriate materials. We would have wanted to have paper clips, aluminum foil, plastic spoons, paper towels, wooden pencils, rubber bands, and rubber erasers to complete the sorting activity. The students were confused about what columns and beams are, so for next class we will bring in photos of columns and beams and have the students make them out of playdough. This activity was age level appropriate for the students. The students, however, were very interested in doing something more hands-on, so if this could be better incorporated into Lesson 1, that would be great. The teacher was not very involved in the activity, but more so in disciplining the students when necessary.
