The way we tested the projects was we built a "cave" out of large boxes and covered it with a black tarp. The cave was actually really dark inside so it became important that the light on the device worked very well. The "villain," made out of paperclips, was hidden somewhere inside the cave and they had to retrieve him with their electromagnet.
The kids really liked this project. I think that it would be possible to finish in three weeks if you can keep the kids on task. Some of the groups were really excited about the project and were basically done by the first day of building, but other, less motivated groups slowed down the process and required us to add an extra week for building.
