My Teaching Philosophy
Art is an integral part of a well-rounded education, and art holds great power in its ability to nurture the lives of all human beings. Not only is education a right of all children around the world, but the quality of that education is just as much a fundamental right. By incorporating art education into the curriculum at our schools, there is an increasing potential for student achievement. In order for these major advancements to be made in the quality of education everywhere, our teaching approach must reflect a comprehensive study of art that is integrated with other academic subjects. The school art program should not only be interdisciplinary, but must also fit within whole school reform strategies, while meeting national standards & state frameworks.
The study of art should incorporate a curriculum which changes and develops with current events, student interest, and other content area integration. As world events spark questions for students, the art classroom has the power to answer them by studying art, critically viewing visual culture, and developing skills to give meaning to students' newly discovered answers. Additionally, the shifts that have taken place in conceptions of the various stages of child development and student learning styles have also supported an expanded view of art that is multicultural and diverse.
Art education is important because it can be conducted as the humanistic discipline, which provides students with the tools for reshaping, re-envisioning, and recreating their own worlds. Art educators should inspire students to develop understandings of the various ways in which art can facilitate positive change, public dialogue, and community building.
Art educators should strive to integrate skill development with student voice, social awareness, and multicultural, anti-racist goals. People from all aspects of life, from all around the world, continue to increasingly come into contact with each other. It will be up to the schools, as educational institutions, to determine how the American people will face globalization. The goals of the art education program should aim to prepare students with the tools for understanding people of diverse backgrounds and to cultivate a passion for promoting peaceful tolerance, and thus social justice, throughout the world.
I graduated from Tufts University this past May 2010. I am now working as an Art Consultant at Wyland Galleries in San Diego, CA. I am continuing my search for a full-time Art Teacher Position.
