  1. Argenziano School, 5th Grade, Ms. Hong (Fall 2011):

    We chose to create this activity because we thought that talking about genetics from the perspective of another "species" would eliminate questions from kids about the more complex side of genetics (ie. there are really more than two colors of eyes that exist in the world). We thought that the activity went well for the most part because we used simpler terms (ie. strong and weak as opposed to recessive and dominant). In addition, when we asked the kids to draw physical features on their snowmen based on the genotypes, we did not give them all the traits and genotypes at once; we introduced only one trait at a time and asked them to draw that feature onto their snowman before introducing the next trait. We also thought that having a mixture of class discussion and individual work helped students understand the material better.

  2. Argenziano School, 5th Grade, Ms. Hong (Fall 2011):

    To reiterate what Griselle said, this activity is a great introduction to genetics. If there is extra time at the end of your class, you can always draw a snowman with certain traits on the board and ask students to come up with the genotypes. For a lot of students, this really tested if they understood how the dominant/recessive (strong/weak) traits worked.
