  1. We did this activity this week with LEGO bricks and it worked really well. I would recommend limiting the number of LEGO bricks each group has access to.

  2. We did this activity in Ms. Hong's fifth grade ESL classroom at Argenziano in order to teach them about sturdy building. The first week we tried it only some of the students were able to build a viable bridge because of limited time and difficulty in communicating the goal of the activity. When we repeated it in the next class it was much more successful. The first week we used popsicle sticks and then we repeated with spaghetti to explore the variation in the strengths of different materials. By the end of the class we had some very innovative and/or strong bridge design.

    Through this activity we also talked about the importance of engineering drawings during the design process. We showed them pictures of professional engineering drawings of bridges and had them draw top and side views of their bridge before they built it.

  3. Ms. Burn's 4th grade class, Healey school, Spring 2013 (Part I)

    We prepared for the activity by gathering supplies beforehand and putting them in little bags, one bag for each group. We used:
    - popsicle sticks (with pre-drilled holes on the ends)
    - coffee stirrers
    - paper clips
    - paper
    - string
    - masking tape

    We started the activity with a brief overview of what they learned last week (the students worked on paper bridges the week before). We then proceeded with a PowerPoint presentation on the types of bridges/examples of existing bridges and how specific design might be useful. We discussed some of the basic physics behind some of the bridge designs (balancing the load, push/pull). The presentation took a while, especially with questions from the students.

    We spent the remaining twenty or so minutes asking students to play around with the materials and figure out their design. The students will continue building their bridges the following week.
