  1. The students in Ms. Tucci's class got very creative with this assignment. We brought a stuffed Mr. Monkey for the activity (and accidentally kept calling it a bear) that posed as the test subject. Our focus for this lesson was on the client and constraints. We told the students that Mr. Monkey wanted a chair that fit well, made him sit upright, was sturdy, and comfortable. We also told the students to have something unique about their chair that would make it stand out from all of the others, what about your chair would make Mr. Monkey want to buy it? We had them use a planning worksheet before they started to build their chairs. Once they were done building, we did the drop test, fit test, upright test, and had the students share about the chair they built and what they would do differently next time. We noticed some pairs focused on other parts of the chair, like wheels, so that in the end they only ended up with a platform, say, instead of the chair itself. We emphasized that during timed challenges, it is important to focus on the main problem before you add on things that aren't as necessary. Mr. Monkey had chairs with air conditioning, reclining capabilities, as well as wheels. Attached is the worksheet used for the students to plan and think about what made the chair sturdy and what they could do to improve it.
