1.      Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) summary of the project topic 

Last semester, I created a Water Resource Plan for the conservation of wetlands fed by the Wiseman Brook in Bethlehem,NH (the wetlands are located on a corner of a tree farm that my family manages). As part of the analysis, I delineated the watershed, calculated the hydrologic budget, analyzed surrounding land uses (and their impact on the watershed), calculated the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for sedimentation, and drew conclusions on the health of the watershed.  I did most of the mapping and analysis either by hand (drawing and tracing) or in excel, though I did use Google Earth for part).  I would like to rework the entire project within the GIS framework, and further refine my maps, calculations and analysis.  For example, I believe I could more accurately calculate the TMDL by using the Universal Soil Loss Equation, which requires that I know the slope length and angle of various areas in the watershed (I found it too difficult to estimate these values with paper maps). 

2.      List 4 spatial/geographic questions relevant to each topic

  1. #* What is the watershed for the wetland?  Additionally, where does the landowner's property border?  Where does the wetland & Wiseman Brook fit into the larger region?
    • How do local land uses affect the Wiseman Brook watershed? 
    • Estimate land use and population density based on "build out" (i.e. according to Bethlehem's zoning laws).  How would build out affect the integrity of the watershed?
    • Calculate sedimentation rates based on land use, slope lengths, slope angles, etc using the Universal Soil Loss Equation.  Convert this into traditional total suspended solids (TTS) measurements
    • Additional hazards (aside from sedimentation) to water quality

3.      Provide 4 references that have helped you to think through this topic and its significant geographic/spatial questions - at this point these do not have to be from peer-reviewed journals, but it will be very helpful for you to review the peer-reviewed literature now or in the near future. Peer reviewed articles will often go into more detail regarding theoretical models, data sources, methods of analysis, results, and limitations than non-peer reviewed articles.

NH GRANIT is New Hampshire's "GIS clearinghouse."  They have detailed information on parts of the state. Additionally, it seems they have pulled GIS data from national inventories (i.e. the National Wetland Inventory) as well.  Bethlehem is located in GraftonCounty, and is a very small town.  So finding GIS data at the local level will likely be difficult; however, I think there is enough from the state itself to make the project work. 
 

Project 2

1.      Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) summary of the project topic 

As part of my Field Projects class, I am working with the City of Boston to create a "waste-shed" - or map of organic waste sources and pathways in the city.  Bostonwould like to implement an anaerobic digestion project, but needs more information about the types of waste in the city, where it is coming from, how it is transported and where it ends up. In working on the project, it may be feasible to develop a GIS map of the wasteshed - organized by major producers, industy (SIC code), type (food, yard waste, wastewater treatment sludge), or sector (residential, commercial, industrial).

2.      List 4 spatial/geographic questions relevant to each topic

  1. #* Where is organic waste produced?
    • What industries are producing it?  Localized in any particular area of city?
    • Where is waste being currently transported?  Sorting stations?  Landfills?  Composting facilities?  Outside of Boston altogether?
    • Strategies for developing anaerobic digester in city?  Location?  Siting?
