To create, as a community, a reliable, powerful, flexible GIS data portal that meets the needs of academic organizations.

Development on this project has just begun. We will rely on many existing technologies, most open but a few proprietary. OpenGeoPortal will use Java, JSPs, JavaScript, JQuery, GeoServer, OpenLayers, Solr and SDE.
GeoServer is an open source software server written in Java that allows users to share and edit geospatial data.
jQuery a fast and concise JavaScript Library that simplifies HTML document traversing, event handling, animating, and Ajax interactions for rapid web development.
OpenLayers makes it easy to put a dynamic map in any web page. It can display map tiles and markers loaded from any source.
Solr is the popular, blazing fast open source enterprise search platform from the Apache Lucene project. Its major features include powerful full-text search, hit highlighting, faceted search, dynamic clustering, database integration, and rich document (e.g., Word, PDF) handling.
ArcSDE technology is a core component of ArcGIS Server. It manages spatial data in a relational database management system (RDBMS) and enables it to be accessed by ArcGIS clients.
