Librarianship

First Year Writing Program

The outreach, research sessions, and other services I provide for the First Year Writing Program at Tufts, I feel are the strongest evidence of my contributions to librarianship. The list below outlines how my work with this program has met the criteria of librarianship as defined by section 3.4.2.1 of the Librarian's Guide.

Promotion of library resources and services

  • Annual Fall Meeting for New First Year Writing Instructors - Organize and co-host a meeting each fall with the Director of the Academic Resource Center. In this meeting we inform new graduate student lecturers of the tutoring services offered at the ARC, the university's academic integrity policy, and the instruction and research services we offer to both students and instructors in the First Year Writing Program.
  • Send regular emails to instructors in the First Year Writing Program to tell them about new and existing library services. (Example: Fall 2009 email)
  • Created a new web page Library Services for First Year Writing Instructors that outlines the orientation, instruction and consultation services we offer.
  • "Getting Students Beyond Google" - article about First Year Writing Program in Fall 2007 Tisch Library newsletter

Working with Others

  • English 3 Research Project Wiki: Collaborated with Sheryl Barnes from Academic Technology and English 3 Instructor Lynn Stevens to create a research project wiki for Lynn's English 3 classes. Trained students in two sections of this English 3 course on how to use the Spark wikis to post research articles and to share project ideas. Wrote documentation on how to find and link to articles using Academic Onefile and Lexis Nexis. (Permissions for viewing are limited to student and instructors; see printouts of wiki in folder)
  • Wikipedia class project: Collaborated with Graduate Student Lecturer Nino Testa and Chris Strauber on a Wikipedia project for the lecturer's English 2 class. Chris Strauber and I became Wikipedians, so we could design a lesson and train students on how to create an article for Wikipedia.

Course Related and Non-Course Specific Instruction

  • Designed and taught research sessions for 73 classes in 2006-2007, 56 classes in 2007-2008 (on maternity leave Spring '08), and 84 classes 2008-2009.
  • English 1 and English 2 Libguide templates - Created these templates for myself and the other instruction librarians working with English 1 and 2 classes to use during the research sessions.

LibGuides Working Group (ULC)
In addition to playing an active role in meetings and decisions made in the LibGuides implementation process, I, along with fellow team member Evviva Weinraub, was responsible for staff training which involved creating training documentation, organizing and teaching three staff training sessions, and meeting with individual staff members as needed.

  • The Libguide of Libguides online staff training manual and documentation - With permission from Ken Liss of Boston College we adapted his staff training LibGuide to meet the needs of Tufts Libraries staff.
  • Citing Sources research guide - Partnered with Karen Vagts to create a Citing Sources LibGuide that can be used by all of Tufts Libraries.

Usability Working Group (ULC)

Marketing & Communications Team (Tisch)

  • National Library Week/READ Posters project - Lead Spring 2009 project to create READ posters for National Library week. Worked with project members Anthony Mengelkamp and Dana Elder to decide on READ posters theme, contact students, organize photo shoots, collect all needed books and props for photos and National Library Week lobby exhibit. In addition I worked with Thom Cox to set up a Tisch Library Flickr account to post READ posters online:

Common Reading Program
The Common Reading Program run by the Tufts Department of Undergraduate Education and sponsored by Tisch College is "designed to furnish all incoming first-year and transfer students with a shared intellectual experience, providing a foundation for critical thinking," as stated by Dean Glaser in his 2009 letter home to first year students. Tied to first year students' orientation week, students are sent a copy of the common reading selection prior to their arrival. Programming events related to the book are then offered to students as part of orientation week activities. This year's book Brother I'm Dying marked the fourth year of Tuft's Common Reading Program.

From its inception, the Tisch Library reference department has recognized the library's involvement in the Common Reading Program as an opportunity to connect to all incoming first year students early on in their Tufts experience. In my role as Coordinator of First Year Library Instruction, I have worked with the Department of Undergraduate Education and more specifically the program leader, Director of Advising & Scholarships for the past three years to identify ways the library can both support and participate in this program. In Spring 2009 a more formal Common Reading Program committee was established in which I was invited to be one of three members. Through this service to the university, I was able to assist the committee in establishing criteria for title selection, finding suitable titles that met this criteria, and soliciting feedback from members of the Tufts community about our final selections. As a librarian for first-year students, I also worked to identify both new and existing library resources and services that can be used to support the Common Reading Program. In using the new Research Guides @ Tufts platform and the What Sophia Recommends leisure reading blog, I was able to connect incoming students to the research help we offer at Tisch and the variety of resources they have available to them through Tufts Libraries. As the Common Reading Program grows, I will continue to work with both the Department of Undergraduate Education and Tisch College to expand the libraries involvement in this important initiative for first year students.

Common Reading Program Accomplishments

  • Summer 2009: Created an online bibliography of resources related to the Fall 2008 common reading title Blue Death. The bibliography was included on the Tufts University Orientation website as a way for students to learn more about the themes addressed in the book.
  • Spring 2009: Proposed Edwidge Danticat's Brother I'm Dying to the rest of the Common Reading Program committee. Title was eventually picked as the Fall 2009 Common Reading Program selection.
  • Summer 2009: Created Common Reading: Brother I'm Dying libguide.
  • Created a What Sophia Recommends blog entry Common Reading: Recommended Reading List listing the additional readings recommended by the Tufts Community.
  • Worked with the Exhibits Committee member Alex May to put up a Common Reading Program lobby exhibit.
  • Wrote an article about the Common Reading Program for the fall 2009 Tisch Library Connections newsletter (See print copy of soon to be published article.)

Tufts Pilot Course ACL 100: Learning with Style, Spring 2009
Worked with Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education Dr. Karen Garrett Gould and Laura Vanderberg Assistant Director of the Academic Resource Center, and Regina Raboin to design a pilot course for at-risk first year students. Co-designed and taught three classes of ten week course. Provided feedback to students and reviewed student work for final Annotated Bibliography assignment.
